As December starts to wind down, we wanted to take a look back at one of the most exciting parts of Silent Events’ 2012.

One of the highlights of 2012 was certainly the Vans Warped Tour. Silent Events’ production rockstar Sam Holt hit the road with the Warped Tour and crisscrossed the United States and Canada for over 40 stops of silent disco mania!

Among the artists that performed under this summer’s Silent Disco tent were Wick-it The Instigator, Tony D’Angelo, Young London, J. Days, DJ Saucy, SAS Attack, and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!

Fuse also tagged along with the Warped Tour this year, documenting the behind the scenes action to see what things are really like on the road. They have turned their chronicles into a show, “Warped Roadies: The Real Show Happens Off Stage.” New episodes of the show premier every Friday night at 11:00 PM Eastern. The most recent episode (“San Francisco”) featured the Silent Events tent. Check the show’s page for more details.

A big thank you goes out to the Vans Warped Tour for allowing Silent Events to join in on the fun and bring the silence to the tour.

Back in September, we posted about the spread of the popularity of the silent disco concept.

MTV and Kia got in on the act as well during the MTV Video Music Awards 2012. As explained in the behind-the-scenes video, an in-show segment featured party partygoers enjoying themselves at a silent disco DJed by a Kia Soul. Kia and Silent Events both participated in the 2012 Vans Warped Tour, with Kia being a key festival sponsor and Silent Events producing the festival’s silent discos for the 41 date North American tour. We are glad that we were able to inspire Kia to bring the silent disco concept to MTV!

Silent discos continue to pop up across the country in various forms and this boom is showing no signs of slowing. Silent Events has produced 157 events in 2012 and is looking forward to a busy 2013! From music festivals to wedding receptions and from high school graduations to public libraries, the possibilities are limitless.

DJ Wick-it the Instigator is a long-time collaborator with Silent Events. He has performed silent discos with us all over the country, including on the Vans Warped Tour 2012. His mashups and dubstep influenced music are being played all over the world. His latest success comes from producing a song for the brand new commercial for Windows 8 and Angry Birds Star Wars edition. Congratulations to Wick-It! We look forward to working with him and his awesome beats again in 2013!

Back in June, we shared with you that Athens, GA based Pretty Road Cases had put together custom cases for Silent Events. Since that first post, Pretty Road Cases has shared some additional photos of their work for Silent Events. Below are some of those pictures of the new equipment in the warehouse and out on the road at Bonnaroo and the Vans Warped Tour.

Many thanks to our friends at Pretty Road cases for their hard work and fantastic products.

Though the concept of a silent dance party at which the music is transmitted to wireless headphones worn by partygoers – more affectionately known as a silent disco – is not new, it has certainly picked up steam and garnered more attention in the United States since first appearing in America at Bonnaroo in 2005. As the first American silent disco company, Silent Events has been bringing the silent disco revolution all across the country.

As with the silent disco scene in Western Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom, the idea of silent discos in American took off on the festival scene around the country, beginning with that first event at Bonnaroo. In the past year alone, music festivals such as the Vans Warped Tour, Bear Creek, Bamboozle, and The Great Googa Mooga employed the services of Silent Events to produce silent discos – and, in Bear Creek’s case, even a silent concert – for their crowds.

Silent discos and other Silent Events aren’t being restricted to music festivals and clubs, though. Locations for these events are largely restricted only by creativity. As reported recently in both print and video by The Wall Street Journal, the London Zoo has been throwing silent discos over the last three years as fundraisers and as a draw for more adult visitors. Silent Events was the first company in America to produce a silent disco at a zoo. The event, which was held at the Denver Zoo, was a great sucess! Unique locations are part of the fun! Silent Events recently produced a silent disco for Gawker Media inside the New York Public Library and has twice produced a Halloween silent disco for jetBlue in the T5 Terminal at JFK Airport in New York City.

Popular culture at-large has picked up on the silent disco concept as well. The 2011 British film “Tonight You’re Mine” includes features a scene with its primary characters wearing headphones from a silent disco.

And with the June release of Little Boots’ latest single “Headphones,” don’t be surprised to find that the silent disco may have found its new anthem for the foreseeable future.

UPDATE: Ypulse featured the silent disco concept and gave Silent Events a shout out in its “Things You Should Know” article posted on June 19, 2013.

Ryan Dowd, owner of Silent Events

After seven years of putting on Silent Discos for Bonnaroo, Silent Events owner Ryan Dowd is bringing the electronic experience to Warped. In case you aren’t familiar, a Silent Disco is a deejayed dance event where the participants can only hear the music by wearing a pair of headphones—so to outsiders, it just looks like a bunch of people dancing to silence. This is Silent Disco’s first year at the mostly punk fest. Dowd thinks that “even the type of kids who come to Warped secretly are getting in to some electronica. It’s so hugely popular how could you not?” He described the Silent Disco experience as “very intimate but also really communal. You can take off the headphones and have a conversation with the DJ, where at any other club you’re just shouting, ‘What? What?'” He noted the “sport of people watching” is part of the fun. “When you’re walking by and watching 300 kids throwing down and you don’t hear what they’re dancing to, it looks really cool.” Wick-It the Instigator—who impressed Big Boi by mashing up one of his songs with the Black Keys—is one of this year’s DJs, so if you’re headed to Warped, you might want to grab one of the 300 pairs of available headphones and learn what it’s all about.

I think kids are also going to like the Silent Disco a lot. It’s a tent where you wear the headphones and the DJs spin. Everyone listens to the same music, but you can’t hear it outside the tent.
